Fundraising Goal Met to Rebuild Crown Hall Steps

The Mies van der Rohe Society is thrilled to announce that we have met our fundraising goal of $250 thousand to rebuild S.R. Crown Hall’s south porch and welcome steps on Illinois Institute of Technology’s campus. This national historic landmark was designed by Mies van der Rohe and was completed in 1956. We truly appreciate all of our donors and their commitment to preserve one of Mies’ most acclaimed buildings.

Rebuilding the stairs is essential to the first impression of the integrity and prominence of the building’s design. It will reinforce it’s landmark quality for the College of Architecture students and many architectural professionals and enthusiasts from around the world who visit year-after-year.

The work will take three months to complete and will complement the previous $4 million rehabilitation of S.R. Crown Hall (completed in 2005) which restored the building's structure and envelope; returned the translucent glass; repainted the steel structure back to charcoal (Mies black); and addressed energy efficiency, electrical, accessibility, and infrastructure issues.

Let’s celebrate at Mies’ Birthday Party: Steppin’ Up!

Join the Mies van der Rohe Society and Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture to celebrate Mies’ 136th birthday and our successful fundraising efforts to rebuild the south porch and steps of S.R. Crown Hall. Enjoy a red carpet style cocktail party, view the MCHAP exhibit, and mix and mingle with fellow alums and friends. Venetia Stifler and Concert Dance Inc. will perform a brief club act on the south porch as a crescendo to Dirk Lohan’s yearly toast to his grandfather, Mies.
